Between August and September 2025, Ethiopian authorities arrested at least six journalists and media workers, including radio host Khadar Mohamed Ismail on August 5, radio host Abdulsemed Mohammed on August 11, and journalist Yonas Amare, who was abducted on August 13 and released on August 22 along with Mohammed. On September 3, Sheger FM journalists Tigist Zerihun, Mintamir Tsegaw and Eshete Assefa were arrested after the Ethiopian Media Authority ordered the station to delete an August 29 broadcast it accused of bias and inciting violence. Human Rights Watch said the authorities' renewed efforts to limit independent reporting were aimed at preventing public scrutiny of the government ahead of elections scheduled for 2026, adding that a free press mattered more, not less, in the run-up to a vote.
