Criminal defamation

An offence under which a statement that damages a person's reputation can lead to a fine or a prison sentence, rather than only to a civil lawsuit for damages. In India, the journalist Ravi Nair was sentenced to a year in prison and a fine in a criminal defamation case in February 2026.
