Terms of use

These terms apply to thewaronnews.com and everything served from it, including its pages, feeds, data downloads and MCP endpoint. "We" means Peter Benes, the publisher of The War On News. "You" means anyone who uses the site, in person or through software.

Acceptance

By using the site you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use it.

What the site is for

The War On News is a record of government actions that have limited journalists, published for information. It is not legal advice, and it does not replace advice from a lawyer qualified in the relevant country. Journalists who need legal help will find organizations that provide it on the About page.

Accuracy

We work to keep entries accurate and to correct errors promptly (see the corrections policy), but we do not warrant that the site is complete, current or free of errors. Events move on after an entry is written, and the pages we link to may change or disappear. Each entry shows the date it describes; check that date before relying on it.

Licence for our text and data

The text and data we write and compile are licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International licence (CC BY 4.0), unless a page says otherwise. You may copy, share, adapt and republish them for any purpose, including commercially, if you credit "The War On News, thewaronnews.com", link to the licence and say whether you made changes.

Quotations and linked material

Quotations are the words of their authors and remain the property of their sources. Articles, documents and other pages we link to belong to their owners and are subject to their owners' terms. The CC BY 4.0 licence does not cover them. If you reuse a quotation, you are responsible for doing so within the law where you are.

Feeds, data downloads and the MCP endpoint

You may read the site with software, subscribe to its feeds, download its data and query its MCP endpoint, which lets AI assistants and other software search the record. Automated use must stay within reasonable rate limits so the site remains available to everyone. We may slow or block traffic that overloads the site, and we may change or withdraw any feed, download or endpoint.

What you may not do

You may not:

  • misrepresent the record, for example by altering a quotation or an entry and presenting the result as the site's text, or by suggesting that the site or its publisher endorses you;
  • remove or obscure the attribution the licence requires;
  • use the site in a way that breaks any law that applies to you or to us;
  • interfere with the site's operation or try to reach parts of it that are not public.

Tips and correction requests

When you send a tip or a correction request, by email or through the MCP endpoint, you give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free and permanent licence to use its content to check, update and publish the record, including by quoting it. We do not publish your name or contact details without your permission. You confirm that you have the right to send what you send.

Do not send confidential information, including anything that could identify a confidential source, material you are not entitled to share or personal information about other people. Email is not a secure channel, and we cannot guarantee that what you send will stay confidential. The privacy notice explains how we handle it.

The site links to news reports, court records, archived copies and other pages we do not control. We are not responsible for their content, availability or privacy practices.

If you believe material on the site infringes your copyright, or that an entry is inaccurate, write to corrections@thewaronnews.com with the address of the page, the material concerned, the reason for your complaint (for copyright, the work you own and how you own it) and your contact details. We acknowledge notices within 48 hours, review them, remove, correct or keep the material as the facts warrant, and tell you what we did.

Disclaimer of warranties

The site is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law allows, we make no promises about it, express or implied, including that it is fit for a particular purpose, accurate, complete, uninterrupted or free of errors or harmful code.

Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of the site or your reliance on anything published on it or linked from it, whether direct, indirect, incidental or consequential, including loss of data or profit. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited under the law that applies to you.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada applicable therein. Any dispute about the site or these terms is to be decided by the courts of Ontario, and you agree to their jurisdiction.

Changes to these terms

We may change these terms. The current version is always at /terms, with the date it took effect. If you keep using the site after a change, you accept the new terms.
