What happened

On the evening of February 13, 2019, officers from the National Bureau of Investigation arrested Maria Ressa, executive editor of the news site Rappler, at its bureau in Manila. The case stemmed from a story Rappler had published in 2012 alleging links between a businessman and a Philippine chief justice; the government charged Ressa with cyber libel under a cybercrime law that took effect after the story was originally published, then updated to reflect a later correction. Ressa was held overnight and released on bail the following morning, February 14.
